Forensics is defined as the application of scientific techniques of investigation to the problem of finding, preserving and exploiting evidence to establish an evidentiary basis for arguing about facts in legal proceedings. Digital forensics is defined as forensics applied to the preservation, identification, extraction, documentation, and interpretation of computer media and network traffic for evidentiary and/or root cause analysis”. The digital forensics research group conducts research in a number of different technologies designed primarily to make digital forensics techniques more accessible to law enforcement officers without technical backgrounds.
